A silent social tsunami is sweeping through Canada, the United States, Europe,Asia and many parts of South America, but not theMiddle East and North Africa. It is a tsunami without fanfare, fire or fatalities.What I am talking about is the rising tide of the “nones,” those who are religiously unaffiliated, a historic phenomenon that needs to be explored and explained since it is of great consequence to our spiritual, social and political future.
In my recently published book, “None of the Above: How the Religiously Unaffiliated are Redefining Religion and Keeping Faith,” I explore in depth the core characteristics and various vital aspects of this modern social tide. The unaffiliated are those who identify themselves with no organized religion. When asked in official surveys or casual inquires, “What is your religious affiliation?” they answer, “None of the above.”
